根据真实故事改编，美国历史上最不完善的银行抢案。 本该是10分钟完成的银行抢劫犯罪，却变成了12小时的拉锯战。桑尼（阿尔·帕西诺饰）算是美国历史上最倒霉的银行抢劫犯了。一个盛夏的下午，桑尼与同伴塞勒（约翰·卡扎雷饰）闯入纽约市布鲁克林银行，准备实施抢劫。怎奈银行刚刚完成交易，金库内根本没有现钱。倒霉的桑尼与塞勒转而劫持人质，与警方对峙提出要求。但4小时后，劫案现场被围观群众和手忙脚乱的警察弄得像游乐园一样热闹。桑尼走出银行对警察的质问居然赢得了群众的喝彩。8小时后，银行劫案登上了电视节目的实况转播，大家仿佛拍电影一样高兴。而这时夜色降临，人质亦出现了斯德哥尔摩症候群，究竟这场闹剧将以什么方式结束？Based upon a real-life story that happened in the early seventies in which the Chase Manhattan Bank in Gravesend, Brooklyn, was held siege by a gay bank robber determined to steal enough money for his male lover to undergo a sex change operation. On a hot summer afternoon, the First Savings Bank of Brooklyn is held up by Sonny and Sal, two down-and-out characters. Although the bank manager and female tellers agree not to interfere with the robbery, Sonny finds that there's actually nothing much to steal, as most of the cash has been picked up for the day. Sonny then gets an unexpected phone call from Police Captain Moretti, who tells him the place is surrounded by the city's entire police force. Having few options under the circumstances, Sonny nervously bargains with Moretti, demanding safe escort to the airport and a plane out of the country in return for the bank employees' safety.
